Uploading an unoptimised photo is like publishing a blog post without metadata. The photo exists but is not working as hard as it could. These optimisation steps take 3–5 minutes and measurably improve performance.
Step 1: Geotagging
Geotagging embeds your business GPS coordinates into the photo file. Google reads this as a location confirmation signal. Manual: use GeoImgr.com — upload photo, enter business address, download geotagged file. Via Ampli5 Pulse: coordinates are automatically applied to all uploads.
Step 2: File Naming
Google can read file names. 'IMG_4523.jpg' tells Google nothing. 'dental-clinic-reception-prahlad-nagar-ahmedabad.jpg' signals business type, room type, neighbourhood, and city. Naming format: [business-type]-[subject]-[area]-[city].jpg
Step 3: Size Optimisation
| Specification | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum size | 720 × 720 pixels | Below this, Maps may show quality warning |
| Recommended | 1080 × 1080+ | Optimal for Maps image carousel |
| Maximum file size | 10MB | Google's upload limit |
| Format | JPG or PNG | JPG for photos; PNG for graphics |
Step 4: Content Selection
Not every client photo should be uploaded. Reject if: lighting is too dark, sensitive information visible in background, nothing clearly shows the business, or quality is significantly below your other profile photos. Request a replacement for rejected photos rather than skipping that week's post.
